Beautiful places to wander—no admission required
One of the things I love most about living on the Main Line is how easy it is to find beautiful outdoor spaces—without needing a ticket or a plan. Some of my favorite afternoons have been simple ones: a walk after the rain, a quiet bench, or wandering a garden path just to see what’s blooming.
If you’re looking for places to stretch your legs, clear your head, or enjoy something beautiful without spending a dime, these free gardens are well worth a visit.
Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden — Villanova
Address:
1829 County Line Rd
Villanova, PA 19085
Stoneleigh is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem—even though it’s right in Villanova. Set on 42 acres that were once part of the Haas family estate, the property was donated to create a public garden focused on native plants.
If you enjoy natural landscapes rather than formal gardens, this one is especially lovely. The paths wind through woodlands, meadows, and seasonal plantings that change throughout the year. It’s peaceful, beautifully maintained, and surprisingly easy to pop into for a short walk.
What I love most is how approachable it feels—you don’t need hours to enjoy it. Even a quick visit can reset your day.
Good to know:
Free admission
Easy walking paths
Plenty of benches and quiet corners
A great spot after a rainy morning (the gardens feel especially lush)

Barnes Arboretum — Merion Station
Address:
50 Lapsley Ln
Merion Station, PA 19066
The Barnes Arboretum is one of those places that feels like a quiet piece of local history. Many people know that the Barnes art collection moved to Philadelphia years ago, but the original grounds in Merion are still here—and open to visitors.
Today, the arboretum is managed in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University, and it feels like a peaceful extension of the campus. It’s not a sprawling destination garden, but that’s part of its charm. The setting feels intimate and relaxed, making it an easy place to stop for a short walk or a quiet break outdoors.
When I visited recently, it still felt early in the season, but it was peaceful and easy to explore. I imagine it becomes even more beautiful as more plants come into bloom.
Good to know:
Enter via Lapsley Lane off City Avenue (Route 1)
Free to visit (donations encouraged)
Managed in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University
A peaceful spot for a shorter walk
Especially nice as the season progresses and more plants come into bloom

Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens
Address:
631 Berwyn Baptist RdDevon, PA 19333
Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is one of those places that feels like a true hidden gem on the Main Line. Even people who have lived here for years are sometimes surprised to discover it tucked away just off the main roads. Once you step onto the trails, it feels quiet and removed from the busy pace of everyday life.
The arboretum is known for its native plants, especially rhododendrons and azaleas, which create a beautiful display in the spring. The paths wind gently through wooded areas, across small bridges, and past streams, making it an easy and relaxing place to explore at your own pace.
When I visited recently, it felt peaceful and restorative—one of those places where you can slow down for a bit and enjoy being outdoors without needing to travel far. It’s easy to imagine coming back in different seasons to see how the gardens change throughout the year.
Good to know:
Free admission and free on-site parking
Known for spectacular rhododendron and azalea blooms in spring
Easy walking trails through woodland gardens
No dogs allowed (to help protect plant collections)
Offers seasonal classes, workshops, and guided walks

Haverford College Arboretum — Haverford
Address:
370 Lancaster Ave
Haverford, PA 19041
If you haven’t walked the grounds at Haverford College, it’s worth putting on your list. The campus itself is an accredited arboretum, with tree-lined paths, seasonal blooms, and one of the prettiest duck ponds around.
It’s an easy place to wander without a plan, and it changes beautifully with the seasons—spring blooms, shady summer walks, and incredible fall color
It’s also one of those places locals tend to return to again and again.
Good to know:
Free admission
Open year-round
Great for walking, photography, or a quiet break
Especially beautiful in spring and fall

Chanticleer Garden — Wayne (free with library pass)
786 Church Rd
Wayne, PA 19087
Chanticleer is widely considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the region—and it’s easy to see why once you visit. Every corner feels thoughtfully designed, with creative plantings, seasonal color, and unexpected details that make it feel both artistic and welcoming.
If you enjoy gardening, photography, or simply beautiful spaces, this is one of those places that feels inspiring no matter when you visit.
While admission is usually required, here’s a local tip: many area libraries—including the Lower Merion Library System—offer free passes. They can be hard to get, but it’s definitely worth checking.
